The JSA The first game of Week Four was between current Indoor League Champions, Flyers, and the winners of the three previous titles, CPA Global Pirates.
This was a tense affair, with both teams seeming to take the ascendancy at various points during the game. All the skills required to be successful in the indoor version of the game were on show. The Flyers kept matching the Pirates in each of the innings and excellent fielding was keeping both teams at bay. In the field, the Flyers faced their toughest test in the League to-date and they found it a hard task to contain the offensive power of the Pirates batting line-up. The highlight of the Flyers’ batting performance was a Grand Slam Home Run by Michelle Thomson which swayed the end result, with the Flyers piping the Pirates to the post by just 2 runs. Final score 61 – 59. The second game of the evening saw the mighty Carey Olsen Woodchucks take to the field against the RBC Lions. It was going to be a tight game, with both teams at the bottom of the league table and somewhat evenly matched in experience. The opening innings started with the Woodchucks at bat and Dave Luce pitching for the Lions. It looked as if the Woodchucks would get off to a roaring start when Harrison Marie, 3rd on the batting line up, scored a home run. But the pitching of Dave Luce was quite difficult for the Woodchucks to respond to, with the spin of the ball ensuring that many foul balls were struck. The combination of this and the 1st basement also saw a number of Woodchucks out at first throughout the remainder of the innings. The Woodchucks were consistent in their fielding, and managed to keep the Lions at bay points wise. There were some mighty hits from the Lions at bat, most of these being denied by the roof of the hall, and the side walls, with the Woodchuck's short stop (Harrison Marie) and third basement (Gary Philpott) collecting the ball and halting plays at second base. The remainder of the match was very evenly matched, but the Woodchucks pulled head, with consistent hitting. Grabbing points mostly by progressing players round the bases to home. Some confusion in the Lion's fielding, saw one Woodchuckette (Amanda Falloon) run all the way home from a massive hit off the side wall. Similarly, Dave Luce's one armed home run saw the Lions make a big impression in the 3rd innings. A fantastic catch was also made by Woodchuckette Amanda off the back wall denying the Lions a home run. Similarly, the Lion's right fielding Lioness denied a home run to the Woodchucks in the latter innings, the same Lioness having made a great stop at 3rd base earlier in the game. You could see the Woodchucks were desperate to increase their slim lead, when 3rd base man, Gary Philpott tried to hit the ball so hard, he missed, spun round and fell on the floor. Going into the bottom of the 5TH innings, the Lions were behind. A gargantuan effort saw them score two home runs, and pip the woodchucks to the win by 2 points. The score: Lions 42- Woodchucks 40. The two Jacksons squads faced each other on Wednesday in the JSA Indoor season. A great show from the pitchers for each side, Andy Barcis for the Falcons and Cameron Ramsay for Phoenix, with both establishing a good rhythm early in the game and also taking home runs to add to their respective teams tally. Falcons Gary Coleman also hit a home run during the game. Phoenix held back the Falcons for the first 4 innings but lost momentum in the 5th, with the Falcons seizing the opportunity to build a convincing margin, eventually taking the game 105 to 37.
The second game of the evening saw CPA Global Pirates take on newcomers RBC Lions. Both teams fought continuously during the game, but despite the roaring spirit of the Lions, the Pirates experience and knowledge of the game proved to be a winning formula once again, with the final score coming in at 33 to 81. Ali Wade represented Jersey Softball Association at this years European Softball Federation congress which took place in Dublin between 6th - 8th February.

This was a baptism of fire for the Lions, as the Flyers went through their full repertoire of defensive plays and batting tactics.
The highlight of the Flyers’ batting performance was a Grand Slam Home Run by Lyndon Rosser. The rest of the Flyers’ batting line-up all contributed to the points tally, but the Lions’ defence had particular problems preventing Sarah Cann and Garry Le Maistre from reaching Home Plate. In the field, the Flyers concentrated on the “out” at First Base on the batter-runner, which kept their opponents points score down and kept runners off-base. The Flyers’ Captain, Chris Le Lion, rotated his fielders throughout the five innings, but Beth Rosser excelled in every assignment, and she was the named the Flyers’ player-of-the-match. After five innings were over, the Flyers claimed the victory with a convincing 130 – (9) score- line. The second game of the evening saw Jacksons Falcons take on the Carey Olsen Woodchucks. Both teams displayed excellent energy throughout, with the Woodchucks eager to show the seasoned Falcons their new-found confidence. The Falcons were undetermined by their opponents, and with standout performances from pitcher, Paulo Dos Reis and second baseman Nardine Nicolas, the birds of prey stole the win from the Woodchucks with the final score tallying up to 107 – 42. The Jersey Softball Associations Indoor League kicked off on Wednesday, with the opening fixture seeing the defending champions, the Flyers, taking on Carey Olsen Woodchucks.
With the glove, the Flyers showed their know-how and experience of playing indoors, as their opponents struggled to reach First Base. A large number of strike-outs by debut Pitcher and Flyers’ player-of-the-match, James Marshall, together with good glove-work and a number of tag-plays combined to restrict the Woodchucks’ scoring opportunities. With the bat, the Flyers Michelle Thomson, Cat Girt and Captain Chris Le Lion made a significant contribution to the points tally by consistently reaching First Base. Quick and aggressive base-running by all the team kept the Woodchucks’ defence under pressure and helped to keep the scoreboard ticking over. After five innings were over the Flyers claimed the victory with a 92 – 29 score-line. The second game of the night saw CPA Global Pirates take on Jacksons Phoenix. Although the seasoned indoor participants, Pirates, got off to a slow start, it wasn’t long before they found their sea legs and began reeling out the lead over their opposition. In spite of this, Phoenix stayed strong and maintained a rhythm as they rotated through the batting order. A special mention goes to Michael Quinn, who took several fast catches on the return and scored a homerun with loaded bases. However as the final innings came to a close, the Pirates were announced as the victors, plundering a win of 79 – 34, with notable performances from indoor rookies, Richard Batho and Stevie Harris, helping them gain the advantage. ![]() The new website for the Jersey Softball Association is now live and can be found at www.jerseysoftball.com.
