dms Jersey Flyers are victorious in Guernsey

dms Jersey Flyers stormed away with an incredible win this weekend to beat Guernsey in the division 2 Upton match, a feat not achieved since 2006.

The dms Jersey Flyers, who have faced their Guernsey opposition on numerous occasions but never taken the victory, were confident and relaxed going into their season finale. Their rivals, Lock In Hit Squad, looked strong and formidable but, after a shaky first innings, the Flyers soon found their groove with the bats, increasing their run-lead each innings. In the field they showed their true strength, with excellent catches being made in the outfield and precision plays shutting out the runners in the infield. The Flyers captain, Chris Le Lion, was thrilled with the win; “After a long season of softball the last thing I would have hoped for would be to face a tough opponent in Guernsey but that’s exactly what we got. Throughout the game the Lock In Hit Squad tested the dms Jersey Flyers but we managed to work hard, stay together and in the end come away with the win. They team did their captain and themselves proud”.  Final score 19-4 to the dms Jersey Flyers.

Next up, the division one champions met in an extremely close inter-island clash of the titans. After the first 3 innings, the Dominion Niners were equally matched with their Guernsey counterparts, the TCCI Tornadoes. Trailing by just 3 runs going into the 6th innings, the Niners looked to mount an attack on the Tornadoes fielding however the Guernsey team dug deep and only allowed 2 runners to pass home, signalling the end of the game. Final score 12-11 to the TCCI Tornadoes.

With two strong games before them, the Island squad’s B team took to the field with high hopes for another rewarding match. Facing a fearless Guernsey B squad, the Jersey team were immediately on the backfoot but managed to level the runs 5-all by the end of the 3rd innings. Unfortunately the Guernsey team managed to pull out an 8-run lead in the next two innings, whilst simultaneously shutting out Jersey. Despite a last ditched effort in the 7th innings which saw Jersey score a further run, they were unable to hold back the tide from Guernsey. Final score 16-6 to the Guernsey B team.

Watching on from the sidelines, the A team were confident that they could take on their Guernsey counter-parts and steal the victory. Scoring 1 run themselves and allowing Guernsey only 2 runs in the first innings, both teams then successfully shut each other out in the 2nd. Despite being well matched in their fielding abilities, Guernsey held their own during their at-bats and began to chip away a lead. Trailing, 2 runs to 10 in the 7th innings, Jersey made one last attempt at a come-back but were quickly halted in their advances. Final score 10-3 to the Guernsey A team.

Speaking about the games, the President of the Jersey Softball Association, Ali Wade, said “I was very proud of the way all the Jersey teams played on Saturday. Congratulations must go to the dms Jersey Flyers for winning the 2nd division championship. It was unfortunate that the Dominion Niners were pipped to a win in the last innings in the 1st divisional championships.  Both the Jersey A and B teams couldn’t find the gaps in a strong Guernsey defence but nonetheless fought to the end.”

High hopes for this weekends Uptons & Inter-Insulars

Although the 2015 Corefocus Summer League has come to an end for many in Jersey, 4 teams are now eagerly looking to the coming weekend for the grand finale of the softball season as they travel to Guernsey to take on their rivals in an annual inter-island show-down that has dominated the calendar since 2001.

This year’s Uptons, hosted by the Guernsey Softball Association, will take place on Saturday 5th September, with Jersey’s division two winners, dms Jersey Flyers, taking on Guernsey’s Lock In Hit Squad for the first game at 10am at Cambridge Park, St Peter Port. Captain Chris Le Lion is confident of an exciting win on the day. “The dms Jersey Flyers are the oldest softball team in Jersey softball history and have faced 2nd division opposition in Guernsey on many occasions, however in all those years the Flyers haven't managed to come home from a Guernsey Uptons match victorious. With some brand new talent and the sprinkling of experience from some old heads I hope we can get our names on the trophy for the first time.”

Later that same morning, the division one winners from both islands will meet at 12pm, with the Dominion Niners looking to take on their Guernsey counterparts, TCCI Tornadoes . As reigning champions of division one in Jersey for the past 7 consecutive years, the Niners are eager to walk-away with this years title after managing only 1 win out of their previous 7 games against their Guernsey rivals.

In the afternoon, the highly anticipated Island matches will take place, with the B-teams for each island going head-to-head at 2pm, followed by the A-teams at 4pm. The Jersey island squad has been training extremely hard all summer with their coaches, Ricardo Pedro, Chris Le Lion, Carlos Teles, Garry Le Maistre and Dave Luce, and all hopes are pinned on this being a golden year, with both teams successfully taking back the titles from Guernsey.

This year’s A- team consists of: Claire Summers, Lyn Ferguson, Michelle Thomson, Rochelle Gardiner, Ronnie McAllister, Sarah Mallet, Aaron Pohatu, Chris Le Lion, Matt Satchell, Phil Bouchard and Sean Billson.

The B-team is comprised of:  Amanda Kelly, Candice Parsons, Cat Girt, Laura Poingdestre, Lindsay Satchell, Micky Gosselin, Nardine Nicolas, Chris Halford, Franck Matthews, Graeme Ferguson, Paulo dos Reis, Russell Wynn and Scott Roberts.

Speaking about the softball-packed weekend, the Jersey Softball Association President, Ali Wade, said “Jersey has a very strong squad of players this year to meet their Guernsey counterparts in both the Channel Island Championship and Inter Insular matches.  All players have undergone intense training sessions under the auspices of the coaches and I know the players are more than ready to win back the silverware.”
