Jersey’s only current travelling women’s softball team, Cowabungas, put together a stunning run across two days to be crowned national champions at their second appearance in the competition, losing out in the semi-final at last year’s championship run.
After a narrow 9–7 loss in their opening game to eventual finalists Havoc, the Cowabungas responded with four consecutive wins, including an 18–4 thrashing of the Liverpool Liver Birds played in torrential rain. They ended Day 1 with a 4–1 record and second in the standings.
On Day 2, they picked up where they left off, cruising through their final two group games with wins of 15–1 and 19–15, before edging a nail-biting semi-final against a strong Manchester side. Tied at 7–7 going into their final at-bat, Jersey scored the winning run in dramatic fashion, prompting wild celebrations on the sidelines.
In the final, the Cowabungas overcame a slow start to defeat their opponents 16–7, powered by a six-run third inning and superb fielding throughout.
Jessica Parsons-Page was named tournament MVP by her team, though the entire roster earned praise for their contributions.
Team Founder and Captain Candice Parsons-Page said: “It was a privilege to be able to join the Nationals Single-sex Tournament and to lead this group of girls to our first team tournament win. Every single player has grown so much in all elements of their game and together as a team. I am proud of this team and their achievements and cannot wait to see how far we can go as a group.”
She continued: “This really is the start of something great for women in softball in Jersey and hopefully we can help grow the sport further.”
With sights set on competing in the higher Competitive Division in 2026, the Cowabungas will next travel to Guernsey for the island’s own women’s tournament later this summer.
