Inter‑Island Rivalry Ignites as Jaegerbombers Win Firstball Finale

Jersey’s Firstball tournament returned in style over the weekend, proudly supported by Voisins and Hamptonne Farm, with 14 teams battling it out across two days of rain, lightning and bursts of sunshine.

Six teams made the trip from the UK, one crossed the water from Guernsey, and the remaining sides represented the island’s growing local softball scene. The competition was fierce from the first pitch, but it was the visiting Jaegerbombers from Guernsey who rose above the pack, claiming gold after a final against Jersey’s own Atom Pirates.

The inter‑island rivalry added extra spice to the showdown. The Pirates kept the early innings tight thanks to sharp infield work from Sean Bilson and Ricardo Sousa, but the Jaegerbombers’ experience shone through and carried them to 15-3 victory. Newly appointed GB Men’s player Jake Elmy and teammate Emilie Batiste delivered standout performances, each earning Finals MVP honours as the Sarnian side lifted the trophy.

This year’s event marked another step forward for the tournament, which has quickly become a staple of the island’s softball calendar. The expanded Tournament Village, supported by Hamptonne Farm, featured local food vendors and a dedicated physio recovery zone. Aurora Sports Therapy and My Recover Ease were on hand throughout the weekend, providing pitch‑side treatment and leg compression recovery for an estimated 60 players.

JSA President, Phil Bouchard, praised the spirit of the weekend, saying:

“Firstball once again showed the very best of our softball community. Even with the challenges the weather threw at us, the atmosphere never dipped. Players, volunteers and supporters created a fantastic event from start to finish, and it’s clear the tournament continues to grow in quality and ambition every year.”

With Firstball wrapped for another year, attention now turns to the JSA CorefocusX Summer League, which gets underway next weekend, 10 May at Les Quennevais where the CEO of Jersey Sport will be throwing out the first pitch up on pitch 1 at 10:15am.
