Close games this weekend for the Jersey Softball Association Corefocus Summer League.
The Dominion Niners took on their closest rivals, CPA Global Pirates, in a battle of valuable league points. The Pirates pulled out a quick lead and held the Niners back for the majority of the game. Seeing the win slipping away, the Niners rallied and began base-hitting to bring home a flood of runners, taking them into the lead when ball-game was called. Final score Dominion Niners 13– 10 CPA Global Pirates.
In the second game of the day, the Jacksons Falcons took on their sister team, Jacksons Phoenix. Both teams batted well, however the strength of the Falcons fielding meant the Phoenix struggled to move their runners around the diamond. Final score Jacksons Falcons 35–3 Jacksons Phoenix.
The third game of the days saw the Jacksons Eagles take on their fellow division two team, Tigers. The second meeting of the two sides was a close affair with Tigers hungry for revenge after narrowly losing out to Eagles in their previous encounter. Tigers started well bringing five runners home to no reply from the Eagles. The second innings was a different story with the eager Eagles, inspired by a lead-off home run from Roberto Pita proceeded to go through their whole batting order, scoring 11 runs in the process. The third and fourth were tight affairs with some excellent fielding from Eagles Tom Menard and Leah Cunningham. In the fifth and final innings Tigers roared back into the game, going through their batting order and scoring 12 runs which gave them a 19-16 lead. The task was clear for the Eagles in their final ‘at-bat’, three to draw or four to win. Two runners made it home leaving the Eagles trailing by 1 before the next two batters were struck out by a determined Tigers pitcher. With two runners on base Stuart Emmanuel stepped up to the plate and after getting to a full count, hit an excellent double to bring home Tom Menard and Nick Henley to win the game. An excellent end to a nail biting contest with the final score Jacksons Eagles 20– 19 Tigers.
