15th Aug - ELEVEN I.S.S. FLYERS (14) Vs CPA GLOBAL PIRATES (26)
With the League title out of reach, these two First Division teams were looking to finish on a positive note in their final fixture of the season.
The Flyers outscored their opponents in the first innings by one run, mainly due to a base-clearing Home Run by the Flyers’ Player of the Match, Phil Bouchard. This turned out to be the only time that the Flyers lead in the game as the Pirates big-hitters took control. The Flyers managed to remain in-touch with the Pirates after four innings, with the deficit only four runs, again by virtue of a Phil Bouchard Home Run.
However, the fifth innings turned out to be the decisive one of the match, as the Pirates sent sixteen batters to the Plate, driving in twelve runs and shutting-out the Flyers. Needing to respond with the bat, the Flyers’ sixth innings was their best of the match, scoring five runs. This was to be the last innings of the game, as time ran out, and so the Pirates ran-out worthy 26 – 14 winners
For the Flyers, there were also good batting performances by Captain Garry Le Maistre, Kate Roberts and Agi Blaszczyk. In the field, Chris Le Lion pitched and defended his position well and Gary Miller forced-out two runners at Second Base.
8th Aug - ELEVEN I.S.S. FLYERS (7) Vs Dominion Niners (23)
This was the return fixture between the two First Division teams, with the Niners unbeaten for the season and looking for the victory to help them on their way to the League title.
The first two innings saw the defences on top as the Niners scored two runs, and taking a one-run lead, as the Flyers could only reply with a single. From that point on, the Niners began to dominate the game. The Flyers were shut-out in their next innings, with the Niners extending their lead with a four-run haul. The fourth innings was a decisive one as the Niners went through their order, scoring seven runs in the process. The Flyers continued to find it difficult to penetrate the Niners’ infield and could only reply with a single run.
The fifth innings was more even, as the Flyers’ batting line-up began to find some form. In the field, the Flyers’ left-sided outfielders, Kerry-anne Laffoley and Phil Bouchard were responding well to the Niners’ big-hitting line-up.
With the Niners continuing to bat through their order and Flyers only scoring one run in their sixth innings, they found themselves with an almost impossible to task to score enough runs in their seventh and final innings to make the Niners bat again. Again, the Flyers were only able to drive in one run and so the Niners ran out deserved 23 – 7 winners.
The Flyers’ player-of-the-match was Phil Bouchard, with his 4 for 4 batting and fielding displays.
25th Jul - ELEVEN I.S.S. FLYERS (25) Vs Cubs (5)
After a run of inter-divisional games, this was the return fixture between the two First Division teams. The Flyers hit the ground running and went around their batting order in their first two innings, scoring six runs in each, including a Home Run by David Turner. The defensive side of the game was not ignored by the Flyers as they restricted their opponents batting effort to only one run in reply.
The third innings saw both teams drive in three runs, which included a Home Run by Flyers’ outfielder, Phil Bouchard. The Cubs defence then started to cope with the Flyers’ batters and restricted them to only one run in the next two innings. However, the Flyers’ defence maintained their concentration and shut-out the Cubs, with Agi Blaszczyk and Kerry-anne Laffoley both excelling.
The Flyers’ sixth innings was the their best of the match, with Chris Le Lion hitting a Home Run, and nine runs were driven in to take a twenty one run lead. With the Cubs unable to score in their sixth innings, they found themselves with an almost impossible to task to score enough runs in their seventh and final innings to make the Flyers bat again. A single Home Run was scored before the Flyers’ defence ended the game, with a strike-out by Pitcher Tim Jones, and they ran out 25 – 5 winners.
The Flyers’ player-of-the-match was their Captain, Garry Le Maistre, with his 6 for 6 batting and fielding displays.
