JERSEY SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION – WORLD SERIES 12 & 13 SEPTEMBER 2009
BA CONCORDE CLUB – LONDON

Jersey Softball Association is once again entering a team in the annual World Series tournament to be held at the BA Concorde Club at London Heathrow next weekend – 12 and 13 September. The World Series is a competition involving national or regional teams even though most of the teams are made of up players living in the UK. There are usually English, Scottish and Welsh teams made up of players who come from or live in those countries. Teams fly in representing Ireland the Island of Jersey and Guernsey or as in a few previous years, a combined Channel Island team. Then there are the “ex pat” teams made up of players living in Britain but originally from somewhere else eg USA; Canada; Japan; combined Australia and New Zealand (ANZACS); Africa. There are no strict qualification or nationality requirements to enter this tournament if for example one team only has 9 players from that “country” then the organisers have no objection to the odd ringer.

This is the 3rd year Jersey has entered a team in its own right, the inaugural World Series tournament for Jersey was in 2004 when the team finished 3rd out of 14 teams. The following 3 years there was a combined Channel Island side and then in 2008 both Jersey and Guernsey had their own teams as is happening in 2009. This year there are 18 teams entering the tournament with both Jersey and Guernsey drawn in the same group which also includes GB Development, GB Masters, Bez Kids (US Armed Forces in Germany) and Ireland. Jersey’s first game on the Saturday is at 10:15 against Guernsey.

President Paul Wilkinson comments, "Jersey has a great record, competing against international teams at the world series, and I know all our players attending this competition will give it everything they have as sportsmen and sportswomen representing our island. I wish them all the best, and Good Luck".

Jersey Squad: Sean Billson; Nigel Hamann; David Turner; Matthew Satchell; Michaela Gosselin; Giselle Gosselin; Alison Christie; Amanda Kelly (CPA Global Pirates); Ricardo Pedro; Lindsay Miller; Emma Mc Caw; Nikki Billson; Christopher Halford (JExpress Falcons); Claire Malzard; Carlos Teles (Dominion Niners)

Jersey B Team v Guernsey B Team - posted 3 September 2009
The first of the Muratti matches pitched off with the B teams each vying for the silverware. In the early part of the match it was Jersey who was the stronger of the two teams leading 3-1 with on base hits from Ric Pedro, Matt Satchell and Franck Matthews. There were big hits from Guernsey’s James Brehaut and Marco Silvestri which turned into home runs respectively. Jersey’s short stop, John Rive had quick reflexes scooping balls into his glove and making outs at 1st and 2nd. Guernsey had a slight lead at the end of the 4th innings only leading 11 to Jersey’s 8. It was in the 5th innings which had Guernsey forge ahead scoring 9 runs with a further 1 in their last at bat but Jersey never gave up and fought to the end, final score Guernsey 21 Jersey 10.

Jersey A Team v Guernsey A Team - posted 3 September 2009
This was the match which had everyone on tender hooks from the outset. In the early stages it was 5-2 to Guernsey. Jersey was up against a very strong side this year with a very tight infield defence of Ben Corson at short stop and Glen Cortez at second although Sean Billson managed an easy home run bringing in Andy Audrain in the first at bat. Jersey’s Carlos Teles at 3rd made important outs throughout the game with two good catches in the 4th followed by an easy scoop-up and throw to Amanda Kelly on first in the 5th. Billson worked well at short stop with smooth pick-ups and outs at 2nd. Audrain at left and Phil Bouchard at right centre also contributed with competent catches. Giselle Gosselin provided excellent back-up in the outfield. Unfortunately all this was not enough to prevent Guernsey from batting fearlessly each innings and scoring run after run and going through the order and more in the 3rd innings. Watch this space for the re-match in 2010, on Jersey soil.

Island Coach Sean Billson commented "We went with high expectations and were beaten soundly in both Island games by a very motivated Guernsey. We have two weeks till the World Series where we will face them again and others and we will be working hard to improve."

Uptons Division II Match – PBS Flyers (Jsy) v Mercator (Gsy) - posted 3 September 2009
The Flyers took a bit of time to settle into the match with Mercator scoring 6 runs in their first at bat which included a home run from Jon Marley. However the Flyers soon got into the groove in the second innings scoring 7 runs. In their second at bat Mercator struggled only managing to score 2 runs with Marley trying for his second home run but only to be thwarted within inches of home plate on a tag by Flyers catcher, Ali Wade. The 3rd and 4th innings for both teams saw some excellent fielding by both teams which meant not many runs being scored. Flyers Pitcher Tim Jones scored the 1st of his 2 home runs and bringing in runners. The fifth innings had Mercator pulling ahead and Flyers playing catch up. In the field the right centre/second base combo of Phil Bouchard and Ray Foster worked well with quick reaction on pick-ups and throw-ins. In the last 2 innings Flyers only managed to notch up 5 runs to increase their score to 15 whereas Mercator chalked up another 7 runs to make the final score 24-15 to the Guernsey team.

Uptons Division I Match – Dominion Niners (Jsy) v Tornadoes (Gsy) - posted 3 September 2009
At the end of the first innings of this match the Niners were 3-1 in the lead which included a powerful home run from Sean Billson which brought in Rena Nelson. From here on the Niners seemed to struggle with the bat due to some strong fielding by their opponents but Tornadoes didnt have it all their own way in the field with Nelson taking some very prominent catches off Ean Sarahs hit in the first innings and Danielle Youlton’s bat in the 3rd innings. The Tornadoes short stop, Ben Corson, was, at times quite difficult for the Niners to penetrate his tight defence but in response the Niners short stop/second base duo of Billson and Claire Malzard worked well making those all important outs particularly in the 5th and 6th innings but this year it was not the Jersey’s team turn to retain the trophy with the final score Tornadoes 14 Dominion Niners 5.

Congratulations to Sanne Slammers – they are the triumphant winners of the first Jersey Softball Association Corporate League. They accomplished this victory by defeating HSBC in their last game of the league 16:12. However, HSBC did not let Sanne achieve this conquest easily by keeping neck and neck with them all the way until the final innings when Sanne accelerated into top gear with their fielding and batting performances. Michael Phillips and Colum Spillane for Sanne attributed to this jubilant win but team captain Claire Malzard commented on the all round team performance and attitude by all players which assisted to this magnificent first. Euphoric celebrations took place after the match.

Quiz Night Success - posted 22 February 2009
Quiz NightThe tables are out, the props in place, the music is tested and working, the chefs are busy preparing the buffet, the people are arriving, there is a buzz in the building. The occasion? Why the JSA Quiz Night of course. 140 potential masterminds turn up to pit their knowledge skills against each other, hoping to win the coveted title, nerves are showing, will we remember what we have been taught? Drinks are bought, teams are formed and nervous calm settles on the attendees.

Finally it is time to begin - heads down, pens/pencils at the ready, answer sheets handed out, the Quizmaster starts the questions. There are “ooos” and “ahhs” heard around the room whilst others are more cautious and whispering behind their hands. “oh yes I know what that is”, someone is heard to say whilst others prick up their ears to try and hear. There are the “no that’s not the answer it is………” What creature is known as a loggerhead? A what? Shark – no that’s a hammerhead, errr a beaver perhaps. No the correct answer is a turtle. “Well done” someone shouts within a team when the answers are read out.

There were 50 questions in all which included pictures of celebrities and music clips. Some racked their brains whilst others easily recognised the celebs and knew the music. Congratulations to Carlos Teles’ and Nikki Billson’s teams who respectively managed to get 45 points and were therefore declared the joint winners. I hear Chris Tarrant is looking for contestants for his game show!

And how did my team (the writer of this article) do? Well, we got a very respectable 36 points.

The JSA thanks Ric Pedro and David Turner for organising a successful and fun event which everyone enjoyed. Thanks of course must also go to Gary the quiz master who once again produced a variety of questions in all areas whilst entertaining the teams during the marking process.

Jersey's Touring Team - 'The Bean Machine' - was in action at the Bristol Wreck. And the beans did us proud by winning all 10 matches, seven group games, the quarter finals, semi-finals and then the final.

The final was played against the Bristol Chipmunks who narrowly beat the Bean Machine in 2007, so a win against a old foe was very rewarding indeed. The full squad, write up and pictures are posted here...
