4th Out

Yes, I know I've raised this before, so shoot me!

Imagine the scene, you have a runner on third with two outs.     The batter comes up and hits a huge fly ball and while the ball is in the air in time honoured fashion because there's two out, the runner on third immediately sets out for the plate and  gets home before the fly ball is caught.

Surely in order for the run not to count (remember, the runner got in before the batter was caught out), the runner has to be appealed for leaving the base early on a caught fly ball?     I can't tell you the number of times that's not appealed and whilst it's perhaps not a big deal, shouldn't we be doing it correctly (or at least, what I think is correctly).

Come on Blues, convince me I'm right - please?

Re: 4th Out

It does not matter when the runner crosses the plate, or if they left early on the fly ball.

The only point that is of any interest to the umpire is that we have two outs and the batter has hit a fly-ball which is caught. As the batter has been caught this is a force-out situation and no runs score on a third out that’s a force-out.

The situation you describe is of relevance if the bases are loaded with one out. The batter hits a fly ball to the center fielder, who catches the ball for out number two. The runners at 2nd and 3rd leave their bases before the catch. The defence makes a proper appeal at (a) 3rd, or (b) 2nd, or (c) 2nd and 3rd.

(a) R3 is the third out and no runs count, if the appeal is made just at 3rd.
(b) R2 is the third out and the run by R3 counts, if the appeal is made after R3 scores.
(c) R2 and R3 are the third and fourth outs and no runs count.
