Softball Equipment

What to wear...
During the early/late season it is advisable to wear long jogging-bottoms and a long sleeved top, if the weather is likely to be cool. In the middle of the summer the temperatures can rise and you may see some milk-bottle legs out on display. Please take care to protect yourself from the sun as you can easily burn!

Players MUST remove all jewellery and watches. If players are unable to remove these items, they must be covered with tape. If players refuse to comply, they do not play.

Footwear...
All players on the field of play must wear suitable footwear. Bear feet, sandals etc. are not acceptable. Rubber or plastic studded shoes are recommended. Shoes with metal cleats or studs are not permitted.

Lots of people get away with wearing simple trainers to play softball, which will probably do just fine. A pair of cheap football style boots with small moulded rubber studs on the sole to for extra grip will help prevent some slips and slides. Other people go for broke and buy specialist softball cleats.

Your Glove...
Most players wear the glove, which is used for catching the ball on their left hand, and use their right hand for throwing. Left handers will need a glove for their right hand. As a newcomer to the sport your team should provide you with a glove, check with them to ensure that they have available equipment for you.

Gloves come in various sizes and if you have the chance, try a few different ones from your teams kit-bag to see which feels most comfortable.

If you are thinking about buying your own glove, it is a good idea to talk to your team mates and discuss what your requirements will be. There are a few good guides on the net to glove buying.

Your Bat...
Once again your team should have a supply of bats available to their players. Bats come in various weights from around 26 oz through to 30 oz, most have a shaft length of around 34". Choosing the right weight of bat for you depends mainly on your strength and batting style.

Bigger, stronger players prefer a heavier bat since they get the benefits of both the heft and swing power. Smaller players with less strength should consider a lighter bat to generate a quicker swing

The best way to find a bat that suits you is to try a selection from your teams kit bag, find one that you are comfortable with and go from there.

Be sure to check the ASA Banned Bats page - as this will tell you which bats cannot be used in competition.
